Hand-crafted Japanese paper
Hand-crafted Japanese paper
These stunning hand-crafted papers supplied by Melbourne-based Kami are Japanese Chiyogami
papers.
Established in 1989, Kami is a purveyor of fine paper and bookbinder par excellence - working with wholesalers and retail customers via their concept store in Fitzroy, Melbourne, where we were thrilled to discover them.
Inspired by kimono fabrics, every piece of Chiyogami paper (made from a mulberry base sheet) is painstakingly silkscreened by hand using intense colours with gold overlay - usually four or five colours at a time.
Although chiyogami paper-making is part of a time-honoured tradition dating from the Edo period (1603–1867), today, the paper is only made by a small number of families throughout Japan. It is becoming increasingly difficult for paper-makers to make ends meet.
We offer the half-sheets for sale and incorporate the paper into our gift wrap service and origami workshops. However, chiyogami paper applications are endless. It can be used to for collaging, bookbinding, origami, home decor and more.
We share a new selection of chiyogami paper every few months because we feel each one deserves special attention. We know you will love this paper as much as we do.
