You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise.
Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? 'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I'll rise.
— ‘Still I Rise’ by Maya Angelou

Thank you for joining us for the first month of Inciting Joy, our first residency project for the year. We have loved sharing the Sydney Road Street Party, Brunswick Music Festival and our special programming for Inciting Joy with you. Thanks must go to our artists and collaborators, to Tiana Khasi - and Ryotaro Noshiro, Samuel Kuzich and Liona Tatafu, Jay Gabriel and Ash Kennedy of Halo Vocal Ensemble - for a breathtaking BMF performance, for gathering our voices together for community singing, to Cecilia Sordi Campos, writer Grace Yee and guest speakers Dr Selina Namchee Lo and Saskia Yeung for evocative readings and magic conversations.
This evening and Saturday afternoon, we invite you to join us for our monthly poetry reading/listening circle or community-making before we close to install the second part of Inciting Joy, which opens on April 5.
In the coming month, our programming for Inciting Joy continues (details below). In the meantime, we invite you to save the date for our community performance and celebration on Friday, 23 May, featuring Tiana and the community choir assembled through our community singing gathering.
As we delve further into the deep matter of joy, we continue to be inspired by poetry, including the immortal words of Maya Angelou from her poem, ‘Still I Rise’ (above). Watch a video of Angelou performing her magnificent poem here [hyperlink].
In closing, correspondences wishes to acknowledge the support of Arts Merri-Bek and Brunswick Music Festival, without whose continuing support our work would not be possible.
Last but not least, I wish to personally thank our volunteer team who have supported our events during this past month—Pornpreya Wongphasookchot, Prim Chanla, Rowan Huang, Junming Shi, Mi-Chieh Chen, Paulina Tuscano, Saskia Yeung, Grace Vescovi and Liaojia (Ava) Jia.
Warmly
